If you work in networking (as a network engineer, NOC engineer or network admin), you are closer to cybersecurity than most beginners. Firewalls, VPNs, routing and DNS are security topics already. The switch is about adding attacker thinking and investigation skills, then explaining your experience in security terms.

From networking to security

01

Map

  • List network work you already do
02

Add

  • Learn attacks, logs and detection
03

Prove

  • Investigate one network incident in a lab
04

Reframe

  • Rewrite your resume in security terms
05

Practise

  • Rehearse interview answers

What already carries over

  • Firewalls and access rules: you already think in allow and deny decisions.
  • VPNs and remote access: a common attack entry point; see network security questions.
  • Packet captures: reading traffic is a skill many security freshers lack.
  • Change control: you know how a careless change can take down a service.
  • DNS and proxies: central to spotting phishing and malware traffic.

The gaps to close

  1. How attacks work: phishing, stolen passwords, moving between systems, data theft. MITRE ATT&CK gives a shared map.
  2. Endpoint and identity logs: security teams look beyond the network to sign-ins and processes.
  3. Investigation writing: clear notes on what you found and how sure you are.

How to explain the switch in an interview

Use a real example: "I configured firewall rules every week. I now want to understand the attacks those rules stop and to investigate when they don't." Then show one lab investigation. See also why did you choose cybersecurity.

Your switching checklist

Map

  • Write five network tasks in security language

Learn

  • Study the top attacker techniques

Lab

  • Capture and explain suspicious traffic

Resume

  • Lead with security outcomes

Interview

  • Practise the "why switch" answer
